En route today visit the wine fountain at the Cistercian monastery of
Irache, it starts running at about 9.30.The monastery has been restored and is
open Tues to Fri 10-14 and 17-21 and Sat/Sun. Pass through small village of
Azqueta where there is a famous walking stick maker. Also just before Villamayor de Monjardin you
pass the exotic Fountain of the Moors on your right. The Church at Villamayor
de Monjardin has a historic silver cross. Long dry stretch from Villamayor to Los Arcos
make sure you have plenty of water as there is no water between here and Los
Arcos.
The Church of Santa Maria is a
very ornate Church, (every inch seems to be covered with decoration) if you are
there go to Mass where they give a
lovely Pilgrim’s blessing after Mass.
Don’t miss the Church of Santo Sepulcro (octagonal Romasesque) in
Torres del Rio notice outside Church for address of current key holder. There
is a private Refuge in Torres called “La
Pata de Oca. I has got the typical amenities in a hostel, including a swimming-pool. It runs by Juanjo, the owner , and Paco, a marvellous cook.
